Study Abroad Development Grants Program 2009

Application Form

The Office of the Associate Provost for International
Affairs (APIA) requests proposals for the Study Abroad Development Grants
program. The purpose of the program is to facilitate the development of new or
substantially revised faculty-led study abroad programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (illinois).
Specifically, the program seeks to:

  • Increase the number and variety of faculty-led programs at illinois
  • Involve more illinois faculty in leading study abroad experiences
  • Support the integration of study abroad experiences and on-campus curriculum

Grants awarded in this funding period will be for planning trips and other activities during spring and summer of 2009.

Funding Priorities

The following activities will have priority for funding:

  • Develop new for-credit study abroad experiences for illinois students.
  • Develop integrated for-credit study abroad components for existing on-campus courses.
  • Modify existing on-campus courses to integrate with existing study abroad experience.

In all cases, successful applicants will be expected to submit a full study abroad program proposal through the appropriate campus channels upon their return, and, pending approval of the proposal, lead at least one iteration of the program.

Selection Criteria

  • Uniqueness of the proposed program (destination, discipline, content, etc.)
  • Projected ability to attract students
  • Accessibility to students from more than one discipline
  • Likelihood of program being offered repeatedly
  • Integration of intercultural learning with disciplinary content
  • Alignment of the proposed program with the international priorities of the college

Who is eligible

Full-time, tenured or tenure-stream faculty as well as academic professionals with a teaching appointment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are eligible to submit an application. Successful applicants must be employed at illinois during the subsequent academic year and are expected to lead at least one study abroad program developed with the help of the grant. The proposal must be endorsed by the applicant’s department chair or head, as well as by the college administrator in charge of study abroad.

Allowable Expenses

Travel and lodging for planning trips and other expenses justifiably related to the planning and development of new or substantially revised study abroad programs (media, books, research assistance) may be funded through this program. Faculty are encouraged to combine program development site visits with their own field research.

Funding Amount

Grant amounts will depend on the type of activity as well as destination and duration of the planning trip. The maximum amount anticipated is $2,100. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek additional funding from other sources. Evidence of additional funding will be considered favorably in the selection process.

Proposal Guidelines

Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with their relevant college contact from the list below before submitting a proposal. In addition, the proposal must be endorsed by the relevant department chair or head, as well as by the college administrator in charge of study abroad. Proposal narratives are not to exceed three pages, single-spaced and should include the following:

  • Destination and itinerary, if applicable
  • Specifics on how the planning trip or activity will facilitate the development or revision of the study abroad program
  • Brief description of the program to be developed, indicating how the site abroad will be used to meet curricular objectives and enhance student academic and intercultural learning.
  • A budget (not included in page count)

A completed and signed Study Abroad Development Grants Program cover sheet must accompany the proposal narrative. Send all materials by the February 13 deadline to:

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the grant funds pay for?

In general, the funds will pay for allowable travel costs, per diem, and related supplies for program development.   The funds may also be used for Graduate Assistant support in developing the program. You should plan to spend the grant funds as you proposed in your budget.

What will the grant funds NOT pay for?

The funds are not intended to support faculty regular salary or summer salary.  The funds cannot be used to subsidize students to participate in the study abroad program.

Will the Office of the APIA or IPS pay for my expenses directly?  How do I access these funds?

We’d prefer that you process all expenses related to the grant through your home department business office for reimbursement.  Once copies of expenses are submitted to IPS, we will reimburse the departmental account that bore the original expenses.

If you do not have a business office specific to your unit, IPS can provide limited assistance in processing the funds.

Will the Office of the APIA or IPS book my travel?

No.  Please book the travel directly or through someone in your home department.

Can I postpone travel funded by the grant?  Do the funds “expire”?

Ideally, your travel should occur close to the time you outlined in your proposal.  The timing can vary by a few months but if your trip has to be postponed significantly, please contact our office for approval.  You will be asked to submit a revised itinerary.

The funds do not expire per se but with this is a very competitive program so we’d expect the funds to be used within one year of notification.  We must also report on the progress of the program to Campus so any significant delays could affect our reporting.

What happens if I need to change the location of the proposed program?

If you have received a grant, the approval was based on the destination you indicated in your proposal. If you need to change the destination due to security concerns, logistical problems, or any other factors not evident when you submitted your proposal, please contact IPS before you make any arrangements.
