Schlör has held research and postdoctoral appointments at the Center for Science and International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London; and the Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1994 to 1996, he served in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh as the US Director of the International Affairs Network, a major project to develop international affairs training capacity in Central and Eastern Europe.
Schlör holds PhD (Dr.Phil.) and M.A. (Dipl.Pol.) degrees in Political Science from the Freie Universität Berlin. In the years after receiving his doctorate, he researched and published on the topics of German and US security policies, transatlantic relations, and conventional arms control. More recently, he has been involved in international education research, including leading a federally funded national survey of institutional practices on underrepresented groups in international education.
Schlör is a member of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), the Commission on International Programs in the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), and NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
